Chapter 13

The next morning, Angela sat at her desk skimming through the contents of the five cookbooks she had eventually checked out after her trip to the library. None of the recipes were jumping out of the ages, either for use that upcoming Thursday or as potential evidence.

“What do you think, Ruff?” She glanced over to where her border collie was lounging horizontally on her love seat, head resting on his paws as he fought to keep his eyes open. “Does suckling pig and minced pie sound interesting?”

What? Ruff barked. You can’t eat piglets!

Angela stifled a laugh at the incredulous look on her dog’s face. She almost circled the recipe anyway for the sheer novelty of it, but then her mind flashed to her own black and white speckled pigs, and she cringed. “Yeah, maybe you’re right. I guess I’ll keep looking.”

After going through a few more pages with no success, she switched gears and flipped to the section where the chief had organized all the witness statements from everyone on set that day. Maybe there was something she missed in the testimonies.

She was halfway through Anastasia Pastor’s testimony, scrutinizing every line and searching for a double meaning she wasn’t even sure was there when—

Ringggg! She jumped slightly when her phone rang, and Ruff put his paws over his nose. It vibrated across the desk before she snatched it up and glanced at the caller’s I.D.

Michelle Blackfoot.

The tension in Angela’s shoulders eased itself slightly, and she swiped her finger across the accept button. “Hey! I hope this call means you’re having better luck with the case than I am.”

Michelle paused on the other end of the line. “Aw! Still at an impasse?”

Angela nodded and trilled the stack of papers between her fingers. “Yeah, I thought I was gonna have a lead with that scrap of paper we found in the chef’s pocket, but we had to send it down for forensics. It ended up being several torn fragments, and was too damaged to decode by sight alone.”

Michelle sighed. “Oh, well, I’m sure they’ll figure it out soon. In the meantime, this might help.”

Angela rested her elbow on her desk. “What’s up?”

“Well, you know how I’ve been interviewing all the questions for that extra day?”

Angela nodded. “Mm-hmm.”

“I’m supposed to meet with Anastasia today, and it turns out she’s teaching a pastry class at the local cooking school. I had to register for a spot to even get in, and there were only a couple of spots left.”

Angela raised an eyebrow. “Is the second spot taken?”

She could practically hear Michelle smiling through the phone. “It will be as soon as you say yes.”

Angela was already standing up and grabbing her coat. “Let me just drop Ruff off at the farm and I’ll be right there.”

Ruff whined. What? No treats?

Angela clipped on his leash and placed one hand on her hip when he put on his best pair of puppy dog eyes. “Sorry, boy, but I’m pretty sure they don’t allow dogs in there.
